Some time ago local photographer Terri Isenhour approached us about participating in a styled shoot at Green Spring Plantation, and of course we jumped at the chance! Of course every vendor brought their a-game, and it was perfect. The shoot was even featured in Chic Vintage Brides!

Real Sealed With A Kiss Bride: Lori and Brian

Our Sealed With A Kiss bride Lori and the love of her life Brian tied the knot!

18320574_1290819447637741_2320783600008357703_o

These two love birds wanted to celebrate their new life together in a small, special ceremony surrounded by only their closest family members and friends. It took place at The Inn at Willow Grove, and was captured by Heather Chipps Photography.

Lori and Brian are one of the most deeply in love couples we have ever seen. Each picture captured a smile, and an expression of bliss. They obviously couldn’t wait to start their new lives together.

When Lori first came to us she was concerned about finding the right gown in such a short period of time–it was only a couple of months until her big day.  Choosing a dress turned out to be easy–she tried on a light gold a-line style from Lillian West, and we all knew it was the perfect look for her big day. The gown suited her perfectly.

Real Sealed With A Kiss Bride- Meghan and Evan

Congratulations to Sealed With A Kiss bride Meghan and her new husband Evan!

They tied the knot on April 29th, 2017.

When Meghan first walked into our store, she was immediately drawn to a soft blush ballgown on the rack. She tried it on and loved it, but it was the first dress she had ever tried on so she made an appointment to return another day to try on more styles.

When she came back for her appointment she tried on a variety of other styles, but nothing compared to that very first blush ballgown. We put her back in the dress, and this time she was sure that it was the “one.”

We’re wishing them many years of love and happiness!

Ask Pat: How long before the wedding should I get my dress altered?

Dear Pat: My dress just arrived (yay!) but I still have about six months before the wedding–when should I start my alterations? I’d like to get them out of the way, but what if I gain or lose weight between now and the wedding? When do most brides start the process?

Here at Sealed With A Kiss we usually tell our brides to start alterations 6-8 weeks before the wedding–typically this is close enough to the wedding date that you’re unlikely to lose enough weight to change how the dress fits. While this is a general rule, however, we often recommend starting alterations sooner under these circumstances:

If you are not doing your alterations locally. Many brides will have their alterations done in their hometown or the town the wedding will be located, rather than where they live, which can often mean arranging time off of work and booking flights. In this case it’s okay to start alterations early enough to give yourself plenty of time to make at least two trips to see your seamstress or tailor.

If you are planning on re-designing any portion of your dress. Making major changes to your dress–for example adding an illusion top to a strapless dress, or drastically altering the silhouette of your dress–will take more time than typical alterations, so you’ll want to give your seamstress plenty of extra time to re-design your gown.

If the dress is way to big or way too small (we’re talking more than two sizes). If you bought a too big or too small dress in a sample sale, or if you’ve drastically changed in weight since ordering the dress, adjusting a gown more than two sizes can mean a lot more work for your seamstress. Adjusting it to your size may mean adding fabric or completely taking it apart and readjusting for your proportions, which can be tricky. In this case the more time you can give your seamstress to work on your dress, the better!

In some cases, it might be best to wait until just a few weeks before the wedding date to begin your alterations. Usually your seamstress will recommend this if:

You tend to fluctuate weight.

You plan on actively losing weight up until the wedding day.

Depending on the dress, just a difference of five pounds can mean the dress fits a little too big or too small, so if either of the above applies to you it might be best to wait closer to the wedding date to have the dress altered.

In all cases, it’s best to call your seamstress or tailor, tell them what your dress needs done and when your wedding is, and ask them what they recommend. They have the expertise to know how long certain alterations will take to perform, and will be able to give you a good sense of when to get the process started.

Customizing Your Wedding Gown Through Alterations

Here at Sealed With A Kiss we specialize in customizing a bride’s wedding day look to suit her individual style. Sometimes that means working closely with our designers to combine or create pattern changes on a design, but most of the time our owner-designer Susan and our expert tailoring team do the customizations right here in our store. Here’s a closer look at some of the easy ways you can use alterations to customize your wedding gown.

ja8664customized

Our bride Rachel found a beautiful lace style she loved, but after she bought the dress she thought the illusion neckline was a bit too much–so we redesigned it! Rachel was much happier with the regular sweetheart neckline and beaded straps.

ja8635customized

Our bride Sarah loved an all over silk gown from Justin Alexander, but said she would love it more if it had a lace top–so we made her dreams come true! Our owner Susan worked with Sarah to design an off the shoulder lace jacket that she can take on and off on her wedding day as she pleases. The jacket gives the gown a totally different look, and it was exactly what Sarah was looking for.

ja8793customized

Bride Judy fell in love with the fitted gown on the left, but had originally wanted a shorter dress so that it would be easy to dance all night at her reception–so we converted the skirt into a high-low design!

ja8792customized

Bride Kelli absolutely adored this gown from Justin Alexander, but didn’t want a gown with a high neckline–so our tailoring team created this gorgeous v-neckline for her! Kelli loved how her gown turned out.

Alterations open up an array of possibilities for customizing your gown, so feel free to ask your stylist or seamstress about altering areas you want changed. We guarantee you’ll be ecstatic with the end result!

Wedding Gown Style: Beautiful Backs

When we first ask a bride about what wedding gown styles she’s interested in, often the answer is “I want something with a beautiful back design!”. Since we love pretty details on the back too, we’ve put together this list of gowns by designers we carry that are all about that back. Whether you prefer lacy illusion or a beaded back, you’re sure to find a gown you love on this list!

  1. This 1920’s inspired design has a stunning deep illusion back covered with a gorgeous beaded lace. Brides love how glamorous they look when they try this style on!

2. This modern take on a classic fit and flare shape has one of the most stunning backs we’ve ever seen! The way the lace frames the deep illusion back makes for a different but flattering shape, and the buttons are the perfect finishing touch.

3. This design features a daringly low illusion back with lace applique details–it’s sure to wow your guests as you stand at the alter!ajkarinacollage

4. This mermaid gown features all-over pearls, crystals and sequins in a floral inspired design. The beaded back design makes this gown a stunner!

5.  Brides are sure to fall in love with the open illusion back on this gown! The embroidered design is sure to turn heads, and the jewel neckline adds a touch of elegance to the look.

6. This elegant fitted design features an ultra-low open back! We love the beaded detail on the v-neck front as well. ajravennacollage

7. Many strapless wedding gowns have gorgeous back design details as well, like this fit and flare design! It features a low scoop illusion with lace appliques.

Tell Me Your Love Story- Alex and Trevor

alexwood1

Sometimes true love may be hiding right under your nose, in the case of SWAK bride, Alex, it was hiding right down the street.  Alex and Trevor were both raised in the Charlottesville area.  Their parents lived only five minutes apart from each other but they never crossed paths.  It wasn’t until after graduating from college that the two would finally meet.  And how did their paths finally cross?  At a friendly game of Putt-Putt with friends of course.  One of their first dates involved playing a gig together, she on the mic and he on guitar, in Charlottesville behind Barracks Road.  Too cute, right?  After that they were inseparable and realized quickly that they would spend the rest of their lives together.

alexwood3 We often ask brides if the proposal was a total surprise or if they sensed it coming, and for Alex it was certainly out of the blue.  In fact, it was on the Blue Ridge for that matter (sorry, had to do it!).  Alex and Trevor often spent time at a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway called Big Spy Mountain, so it wasn’t uncommon for them to decide to spend the afternoon there.  Little did she know that he had planned a picturesque picnic proposal that included her family surprising her afterward.  On the way to Big Spy they stopped at the gas station, Sheetz, so she could order her favorite sandwich.  Sheetz has a made-to-order system and you can usually expect to wait about 5-10 minutes for your order to be complete.  Today wasn’t one of those days – they waited 53 minutes for her sandwich, yes, you heard me right, 53 MINUTES!  That has to be some kind of record.  Trevor is usually very calm and collected so she was slightly surprised at his antsy and short tempered demeanor in Sheetz – can’t blame the guy!  Finally her order was ready and they made their way to Big Spy.  Now, they have visited alexwood2this lookout before and it’s usually totally empty, hence why he chose the spot to propose.  They arrive at the lookout surprised to see of a couple of hikers taking a rest.  At this point I’m sure Trevor is thinking something along the lines of “seriously, of all days”.  That didn’t stop him, he was determined to set this day right.  He proposed to Alex overlooking the beauty of the Blue Ridge.  She immediately burst into tears of joy not noticing the concerned hikers glaring at her.  Although she can’t remember actually saying “yes” her excitement more than made up for it.  A few moments later the hikers walked by and made a sarcastic comment along the lines of “well, you all look like you’re having a great time…”, not realizing that she was crying happy tears.  She laughed at how awkward it all actually was, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.  She was so overjoyed and excited to be engaged to the love of her life.

Alex found her gown well in advance so we were lucky to share quite a bit of time with her and her family.  I remember the day she said yes to her dress, surrounded by her family.  We all knew it was the one and agreed it was going to be so perfect for her vineyard wedding at Pippin Hill.  And that it was.  Alex and Trevor were married at Pippin Hill in June.  It was everything and more by looking at the photos.  Thank you again, Alex, for being so wonderful and easy going.  We wish you both the best in marriage and life!
